Orchids and a woman - a special connection

What comes to your mind when you hear the word orchids ? I won't be surprised if you got the images of fancy and exotic orchids as part of a floral decoration, in a bouquet or in a flower vase.

Again, what comes to your mind when you hear of a woman researcher ? I won't be surprised if you got the image of a lady in a white coat working in a lab surrounded by lab equipment.

With the above 2 images, if we start a conversation with Ms. Jis Sebastian, there will be a lot of surprise and wonder. Jis is a researcher who has worked in the forests of India for more than 12 years now, and she specializes on orchids.

She shares how orchids are good indicators of climate. She is currently working on developing utilization prospects of native and hybrid orchids for farmers engaged in horticulture. Well, that is something where her research can directly impact the lives of people!

Plus, her research, she shares, is about spending long hours in the forests. She talks about how she climbs huge trees and how she has to spend from morning till late evening observing and how much of patience this demands.

She talks about growing up in a small village in Kerala and how she got interested in this area. And of course, the challenges she faced in terms of choosing an unconventional course, and that too going far away to study. The kind of challenges she faced in her projects are something very new and quite scary as well.
