Introduction to Pregnancy Coaching

It all started with one of the listeners reaching out to me with a request for an episode on pregnancy. Not just any episode on pregnancy, but with specific focus on societal pressures on the woman to get pregnant and the agency a woman may or may not have in this very important decision of her life. I wasn’t sure about whom to contact who could talk on this topic, with expertise on this topic.

Several months later, another listener recommended I meet her friend for a potential podcast episode. That’s how I got in touch with Anurama Suresh. We discussed her area of expertise and imagine my surprise when she said coaching and more specifically fertility and pregnancy coaching!!

I wasn’t aware of this term called pregnancy coaching. And when she narrated what she does and the kind of challenges her clients face, I concluded this truly needs to be there on the New Indian Woman podcast.

And some of the pointers shared by Anurama are really worth pondering over -

In a country like India, where we have had our great grandparents who have had 7 or even 10 children, our young generation couple are facing severe fertility issues. Most hospitals and medical community blame life style issues.. But, this young generation people are the ones who are a lot more health conscious. They exercise, eat healthy, run marathons regularly. So, what is the actual challenge that is getting missed out? The elephant in the room that goes unnoticed..

The fears and insecurities that these young gen couple face when it comes for everything related to pregnancy. 93% women have delivery related fears. 97% working women have insecurity around their career - many are not able to visualize a life as a full time homemaker. They have fears that their promotion or recognition as hyper achievers at work would diminish once they announce to their manager / tech lead that they are pregnant.

Are these fears only limited to women ? What exactly does the man go through ? Are we even aware ?

How to address these fears and what the young couple go through ? That is where pregnancy coaching becomes relevant. And it is relevant for all of us, regardless of our life stage, to know about what today's youngsters go through and help them in whatever way possible.

In Part 1 of this 2 part series, Anurama explains to us some of these challenges and what pregnancy coaching is and how pregnancy coaching helps young couple. She clarifies doubts on whether pregnancy coaching is only for women. The subsequent part of the conversation gets very interesting and opens our eyes to something that has been happening right in front of us all the time.

We talk about how the problem manifests more for the women, while actually it may be faced by the couple together. And how, we the New Indian Women podcast listeners can make a difference and help the men in our life as well.

We also talk about the relevance of pregnancy coaching in the context of fertility treatment.

Finally, we discuss the question around young couple wanting to postpone conception and if that is the cause of all trouble!

I welcome you to listen to this episode and share your feedback.
